Dear City Church family,

As we head into the end of the year, I am grateful for all that God has already done this month at City Church. We had a great evening kicking off the Christmas season at Christmas On The Moon. Our Advent study is live and ministering to people on a daily basis as we enter into the Advent season together. I hope that you are finding time to reflect on the birth of Christ, when God sent his only son to Earth to rescue us from our sin.

I also want to share some exciting news with you about our growing church staff of men and women serving to help the gospel go forward in Tallahassee and beyond. We have hired Andi Ratliff to serve in the much-needed role of Campus Director at the Sessions Road campus. Andi and her husband, Clay, have been members at City Church since the “early days” and have served faithfully in a number of ministry areas, including pre-marital counseling, as City Group leaders, and most recently coordinating the baptism process at Sessions Road. They have two boys, Branden and Evan, who are part of City Church KiDS each Sunday.

Andi’s primary responsibilities in this role will be to oversee the operations of the Sessions Road campus, especially in the context of Sunday mornings, as well as to oversee care and connection for the campus. She is already working with our deacons, Sunday morning volunteers, and staff ministry directors to ensure that the Sessions Road campus is running well and serving its members and attenders in a number of ways to encourage spiritual growth and living on mission.

You may be wondering why our staff and elders decided to hire a Campus Director for this campus, since I am based here on Sundays, and since the campus serves as our “broadcast campus” by streaming sermons to the East Campus. There are several reasons why we felt this was a significant need. As the Senior Pastor, I will continue to oversee preaching, vision, and leadership for both City Church campuses and our church as a whole. However, in the same way that Matt Crawford serves the East Campus by overseeing care, connection, and spiritual growth of people on a ground level, the same need exists for the Sessions Road campus.

I hope and pray that we will launch more campuses in the future to reach even more people with the gospel in Tallahassee.  Campus leaders play a critical role in church growth to care for people well. These leaders also exist to keep campus-specific staff members unified and working together toward shared goals to see our church grow, as we trust the Lord with what He will do.

You may also be wondering about the distinction between Campus Director and Campus Pastor. In terms of overseeing the daily operations of the campus and staff, and leading ministries of care and connecting people, Andi and Matt fill equal roles as they lead their campuses. Matt holds additional leadership in preaching, and also provides pastoral oversight and counsel to his campus, as he has been ordained in the Church to fill a pastoral role. Our elders and I feel confident that bringing a woman into the role of Campus Director is appropriate and a good thing for our church, and are excited to support Andi as she serves in this role under the oversight of the elders, as do all of our staff.

I hope that you will celebrate Andi and pray for the Ratliff family as Andi transitions into her new role. If you call the Sessions Road campus home, I hope you will make plans to join us this Sunday, and also for Christmas Eve services at the Sessions Road Campus. Merry Christmas!

For the gospel, for the city,
Dean
