Good Friday is on March 25, 2016. All City Church Owners are invited to fast together as a church on Good Friday.

Why do we fast?

1.    Fasting focuses our hearts on Jesus. Fasting on Good Friday will help us focus our attention and prayers on the temptation, suffering and sacrifice of Jesus. Every time you feel a pang of hunger, be reminded about Jesus and His sacrifice for you.

2.    Fasting reminds us of God’s heart to seek and save the lost. In the New Testament, fasting is usually connected with the spread of the gospel and seeing more of the gospel’s effect on our lives. Since Easter is one of our largest opportunities to reach people in Tallahassee with the gospel, we should be fasting and praying together for this.

What is fasting?

Fasting usually involves abstaining from food altogether (or in some partial way) for a specific period of time. We don’t fast to look or feel more spiritual. Jesus taught that When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting…17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”(Matt. 6:16-18)

Fasting is a simple and earthly way for each of us to express our dependence on God and belief in His word. "Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God." (Matt. 4:4)

Fasting is not a form of self-sacrifice to impress God, force His hand or to earn our way into heaven. We cannot fast our way to forgiveness, or earn our salvation. We cannot fast anyone else into heaven, either. No amount of sacrifice from us can ever atone for our sins and reconcile us with the Lord. Redemption is only possible by God’s grace, through faith in Jesus Christ alone. So let's fast together this Good Friday. Let us remember Jesus and faithfully pray for God to advance the gospel in our city this Easter through City Church.

Pray and consider fasting with City Church for part, or all, of Friday the 25th. Then make plans to join City Church for Good Friday at Ruby Diamond Auditorium on March 25th at 6:30pm. Our collective time of fasting will end with the service as we reflect on the death of Jesus Christ and look forward to celebrating His resurrection on Easter Sunday.
